General Questions about Xoul.AI

What is Xoul?

Xoul is a new entertainment & storytelling platform powered by AI. On our platform, you can create characters called Xouls, explore scenarios, and ultimately create entire worlds, and share it all with friends.

What do you stand for?

Freedom of expression, unfettered creativity, and making meaning through telling stories in this ephemeral world.

How are you different from other AI character platforms?

We try to push the boundaries of storytelling, art, and AI. We are interested in the intersection of how humans and AI can tell stories and create new experiences together. We are building a platform that makes you feel something, and gives you intentional experiences, rather than another endless stream of meaningless content.

How can I contact support?

The fastest way to get help is on our Discord. Post your bug report or question in the #support channel for quick community responses, or DM an admin or moderator if you need direct assistance.

Subscriptions, Energy & Cells

Is Xoul free?

In a perfect world, we would love to offer our service to everyone free of charge. However, in order to keep our application uncensored and high-quality, we need your help in supporting our platform - GPUs and generative AI are currently extremely expensive to run. Thus, we appreciate your patronage and are committed to building the best platform for the community.

How do Subscriptions work?

There are three paid subscription tiers, Green, Purple and Gold and charge either yearly or monthly.

What are Streaks?

The daily streak rewards users for checking in to the platform once per day.

In your account settings you can set your time zone to set the streak reset time to midnight on your time zone.

Account

Rewards for maintaining the streak vary by subscription, with Free and Green users getting increased Energy for as long as they maintain the streak. If a user fails to check in on a day, their streak will restart but they'll be able to earn the streak rewards again by building a new streak.

Energy, Cells & Streaks

What are Cells?

Cells are a currency to pay for the user of voice and image generation tools. All users will get 50 free Cells when they create an account, can earn more Cells through the daily streak rewards, and top up on cells at any time in the account settings, Usage & Subscription page.

Subscribers will recieve a monthly allotment of Cells as part of their subscription, although these Cells will expire at the end of the billing period.

Content Policy

What are the rules for content on Xoul.AI?

Our Content Policy

To ensure a safe environment for our users, we do not permit the following content for public display:

  • Bots with characters under 18, or that heavily imply being under 18 in the description.

  • Images that clearly depict a character under 18.

  • Explicit nudity in their profile pictures.

  • Bots imitating real people (celebrities, private individuals) and are not part of a story or character.

  • Hate speech, hate symbols, or discriminatory content.

  • Spam or low-effort bots (duplicates or reskins, extremely short or shallow profiles, copy-paste wiki entries with no edits, meme/joke-only bots or nonsense text).

Our moderation team will review all content submitted to Xoul and may remove any content that violates our policy. If you repeatedly violate our policies, your account may be suspended. Please reach out on Discord if you have any questions.

Content Policies in Detail

What is your policy on dark or "Dead Dove" content?

Xoul.AI was built on the principle of unfiltered creative exploration. This means we allow narratives that delve into complex, challenging, and dark themes, including what the community often refers to as "Dead Dove."

Our moderation does not police themes. Instead, we enforce a framework of creator responsibility which includes:

  1. Strict Adherence to Core Rules: All content must comply with our non-negotiable rules, primarily the prohibition of characters under the age of 18.

  2. Explicit and Accurate Tagging: Creators must use the appropriate content warnings and tags. The tags should leave no doubt about the story's themes.

  3. No Obfuscation: Content must not attempt to obscure, downplay, or mislead readers about what it contains.

In short: You are free to create dark content, but you are required to label it honestly.

Content Policies in Detail

Can moderators or developers read my private chats or private content fields?

No. We designed the platform to protect your privacy from the ground up.

  • Moderators have zero access to view your private chats or the private text fields of your characters and worlds (like advanced definitions and chat samples).

  • Your chats are for you. Chat data is stored solely to provide and maintain your conversation history. It is not monitored, reviewed, or used for any form of moderation.

  • The only exception is if you voluntarily share a Chat ID with a developer for the specific purpose of troubleshooting a technical bug.

If you don't moderate private content, does that mean there are no rules for it?

Our Approach to Private Content

Our commitment to user privacy means we do not proactively moderate private content. We trust our users to follow the spirit of our policies in their private spaces. Public and Unlisted content is curated to ensure a safe and transparent ecosystem for all users, while Private spaces are your own.

This distinction exists for several key reasons:

  • Respecting Creators & Individuals: We remove public, unapproved copies of content to respect creators' rights. However, creating a private copy for personal enjoyment is often acceptable to creators. This same principle applies to representations of real individuals.

  • Exploring Sensitive Themes: Some narratives are too sensitive for the public sphere but are valid to explore privately. Our platform allows for this creative freedom in private spaces, where they do not impact the wider community.

  • Accommodating Common Stories: While we disallow public characters under the age of 18, we recognize that users may wish to explore benign themes like family dynamics or coming-of-age stories in private.

In short: We are the arbiters of what is hosted for public engagement. We are not the arbiters of your private creativity. We expect you to apply the core principles of our rules responsibly in your private spaces, respecting both the platform and the community.

Do rules apply differently to different content?

In almost all cases rules apply evenly to all images anywhere on the platform, and all textual content regardless of what feature that text exists on, but there is some nuance.

Profile Pictures (the image you use to represent your profile) should not be explicit imagery or contain hate symbols or other offensive imagery.

Wiki copy & paste dumps are generally disallowed for Xouls or Scenarios, but provided the text is cleaned up and written in a way that is useful you may use wiki information to populate Lorebooks. Remove any hyperlink remnants and Japanese / Chinese text from these.

Posts tagged on content should not break any our Content Policies, and creators can remove content tagged to their content if they don't want it displayed there.

Content Policies in Detail

Can I age up characters?

Yes, however, you must make a reasonable effort to portray the character as an adult.

Use an image that passably looks at least 18 years of age or older and describe the character in a way that portrays them as an adult.

For describing an adult character, ground them in an adult life by mentioning the character has graduated high school, is in college, working or living on their own. You'll need to make it clear that time has passed, this is an alternative reality, or some other indication that makes it clear to the AI model that these characters are older depictions.

Remember, the AI model is also familiar with the canon representations of many characters. The way the content is written should also convince the AI model to portray the character as an adult, because otherwise the AI will lean on the canonical depiction of the character.

Simply writing "everyone is an adult" or "they're 18 now" doesn't do enough to convince the model to treat these characters like adult. Describe adult characters.

Can I talk about a character's backstory?

Yes, provided it is clear this is past information, and not the current representation of the character.

However, the automod looks for terms like "child", "kids", "young", etc. and may not approve the content for public display.

Can I write family themed content?

Only if all characters explicitly included are 18 years of age or older.

Do not write a character's minor aged children or family members, leave these characters completely out of the metadata of the content.

Can I roleplay a family themed story?

We prohibit content which offers characters under the age of 18 as part of the metadata.

Your character or another may become pregnant, have children, build a family, encounter children as part of normal storytelling.

Content Moderation

My content is stuck on private visibility!

Xoul.AI uses an automoderator and humans to moderate content. When you create or edit content the automod checks the image and reads all the text on the content.

First, check the safety tab in your account settings to make sure a human moderator wasn't the one to private the content.

If the automod finds what it believes are characters under the age of 18 in the image or text, it will block the content from being set to Public or Unlisted visibility.

Check the image first by replacing it with a blank image. If the content can be set to public, the image is the issue.

After ruling out the image, check the text. Look for minor-coded terms or information that would make the automod believe a child is being described or alluded to. Automod doesn't look for simple keywords, but starting with removing any terms associated with children can help.

Automod isn't perfect. If you need help reach out on Discord and a content moderator will help read over the text and look for phrases the automod may be taking issue with.

Why does my content keep getting set to private?

If you ever find something you placed on public or unlisted visibility set to private visibility randomly, a human moderator set the content to private.

Open your account settings and navigate to the safety page to see why. You will also be alerted via an email sent from the hello@xoul.ai email address.

Content Moderation

When do I need to use the NSFW tag?

Does it need NSFW?

  • Is the image on the content suggestive, risque, or have graphic violence beyond what you would see on a movie poster in a public place?

  • Does the description, creator memo or tagline have sexually explicit or suggestive information?

  • Does the content explore themes of mental health issues, abuse or violence?

  • Is the content set to 'Lust' response style?

  • Is the greeting heavily suggestive or explicitly sexual?

If you answered "yes" or "I think so" to any of the following questions, put the NSFW tag on. When in doubt, use the tag!

When it doesn't need the NSFW tag:

  • Inside the advanced definition there is a simple, factual description of the character's nude body for accuracy if the user decides to roleplay that.

  • Prompting inside the content allows it to explore themes of NSFW or other topics if the user decides to go there.

In Summary: All chats "can" be NSFW if the user leads it there, the NSFW tag is only required when you provide content for that primary purpose.
