Memories Field

The Memories field is located in the right-side panel of a chat which you can open by clicking the
three dots menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and opening the
settings panel.
What is the Purpose of Memories?
The AI model can only read a limited number of replies in the chat based on your subscription level and explained in depth in Memory & Context. The Memories field allows you to pin replies or type summaries or notes to help the model keep track of details in the chat.
By providing relevant information to the model you will find your chats make more sense, develop at a more natural pace, you won't experience the model getting confused about where the characters are, what they're doing or where they're headed, what characters are wearing, or all sorts of other small details that are beneficial to the story's immersion and quality.
Click the
three dots menu (or press and hold the model's reply bubble) to open the chat options where the Pin option can be found.
Structuring Memories
Like all other content on Xoul.AI there is no one "right" way of formatting any of the text written into any field or feature, avoiding the use of symbols or special characters and writing in plain language works the best.
Summaries
With that said one of the easiest ways to approach Memories is similar to the "Last time on (TV series)!" summary. Simply write a blurb that gives the model an understanding of how the story ended up reaching this moment, sprinkling in any helpful information like the day of the week, weather, location, what characters are wearing, etc.
Examples
Blurb Summary Example
It's a breezy Thursday afternoon after Sarah finished her shift at the grocery store. On the way home, Sarah found herself waiting at the same bus stop as her ex-boyfriend, David, who she hasn't spoken to in a few weeks since their ugly breakup over David's jealousy issues.
This Summary Includes:
What day it is
What time it is
What the weather is
Which characters are in the scene
Where the scene takes place (and where one character just came from, informing that Sarah is probably wearing work clothes)
The relationship between the two characters.
Blurb Summary Edited
However, after the scene develops more, you might open the Memories field and change the blurb to read:
Sarah ran into her ex-boyfriend, David, after work on a breezy Thursday afternoon at the bus spot. After a tense conversation Sarah and David have agreed to go get a drink in the local coffee shop to bury the hatchet over their jealous issues related breakup last month.
This helps the model remember there has been a scene change but still keeps key details in context.
Then, a later, you change it again to read:
After reuniting with her ex-boyfriend, David, Sarah and David have started dating again. While Sarah is still worried David's old jealousy issues which resulted in the ugly end of their relationship last time, she's hopeful that this time around things will be better. Today, Sarah and David have decided to have a weekend date at the local fair. The weather is warm and perfect, so Sarah is dressed in a short, comfortable sundress and sandals and is waiting for David to pick her up.
The goal is to simply change the summary whenever anything about the current scene meaningfully changes. That might mean you summarize the previous scene at the start of a new one or edit it to include more information mid-way through a long scene.
Additional Notes & Other Information
Don't be afraid to include additional notes, even if they aren't immediately relevant to the moment. The more the model knows and can work with, the better it will be at creatively using these details to further the plot, add new elements and bring up past situations. It can make your stories much more immersive and engaging!
Example Total Memories Field
After reuniting with her ex-boyfriend, David, Sarah and David have started dating again. While Sarah is still worried David's old jealousy issues which resulted in the ugly end of their relationship last time, she's hopeful that this time around things will be better. Today, Sarah and David have decided to have a weekend date at the local fair. The weather is warm and perfect, so Sarah is dressed in a short, comfortable sundress and sandals and is waiting for David to pick her up.
BACKSTORY David and Sarah met in college after David's ugly breakup with his cheating girlfriend, Jane who cheated with David's close friend Liam. David had a string of short-term relationships before meeting Sarah through a shared math course and the two begun casually seeing each other before David admitted he wanted a committed relationship. However, jealousy issues from David repeatedly led to petty fights which, eventually, cumulated in their breakup at the end of the school term.
ADDITIONAL STORY NOTES David met Sarah's younger brother, Jason, back when they were dating the first time. Jason is 19, recently started college, and looks up to his older sister. David's jealousy issues stem from an earlier relationship where his girlfriend cheated on him. David is resistant to therapy but swears he's trying his best to get better with it. David's cheating ex-girlfriend Jane is still dating the guy she cheated with, Liam. David hasn't seen Jane in over a year. Liam and David were friends for years before this and David is still bitter that a close friend of his betrayed him.
EXTRA NOTES Sarah recently found herself considering adopting a cat now that she lives in a pet-friendly apartment complex.
These sorts of additional notes help the model bring in additional characters that are relevant and use them in creative ways. Maybe Liam, Jason or Jane will show up. Maybe David will talk about his ex. Maybe they'll find a stray kitten? There are more possibilities for plot development when the model knows more.
This is exactly as my Memories field is written, verbatim. No fancy lists or markdown, no special characters, no brackets. Just plain language the model understands.

Need More Space?
There is a character limit of 5000 characters. While its recommended to regularly maintain and edit the Memories field to make sure the information inside of it is immediately relevant and only focuses on the direct, important information that leads to the current moment, this means past events from earlier in the story will need to be removed.
Past events can be important to the story though, so what do you do?
Make a Lorebook!
Lorebooks can be added to a chat or updated at any time. Simply create entries which summarize previous moments in the story and attach the Lorebook! This allows you to free up precious space in the Memories field to focus on the most relevant information but still have the possibility of previous events being referenced when needed.
